November 18-19 East Austin Studio Tours
Patrick Carroll, an artist and illustrator based in Austin, has always had a passion for drawing since he was a child growing up in Upstate New York. Some of his earliest memories involve creating quirky picture books and playing imaginative games with his mom. Drawing became a way for him to deal with anxiety, providing an escape into a world of his own creation.
As a kid, Patrick was heavily influenced by TV shows like Pokémon, Dragonball Z, and The Simpsons, which played a big role in shaping his artistic sensibilities. After high school, he pursued his passion by studying Communications Design with a focus on illustration at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York.
However, his heart found its true artistic home in Austin. After visiting a few times and feeling an immediate creative connection, he made it his new residence. Patrick's art serves multiple purposes—it's a means of self-reflection, a way to express life's challenges and oddities, and an exploration of his wild imagination.
His work can be strange and even a bit unsettling, but in an entertaining way, like a more offbeat version of Peewee's Playhouse or a bizarre character doing a Borat impression. In his freelance career, Patrick takes on a variety of exciting projects, from designing show posters and album covers to creating logos. He's collaborated with brands like Pabst Blue Ribbon and Spring-Heel'd Jack and worked with fellow artists such as Joe Cappa and Wizard Skull.
Patrick is an active participant in group art shows, including one with a horror theme at Upper Playground in Portland. He's also contributed to collaborative zines. Over the past five years in Austin, he's navigated the challenges of the pandemic, battled alcoholism, and rediscovered the city's beauty through the lens of sobriety.
Now, Patrick is thrilled to join Raaisin in the Sun for the Blue House project, where he plans to create a plethora of unique and imaginative art in this inspiring space.
