We are thrilled to reveal our latest mural project in partnership with DPR Construction and artist Amado Castillo III! This large-scale piece was installed in the indoor wall of the newly inaugurated DPR-OES-EIG workshop & warehouse (known as El Taller), where employees take breaks and pass through to other areas of the building.
This mural was curated to highlight DPR’s incredible staff and their dedication to building the Austin skyline. Austin is an ever-growing, ever-changing city, and we at Raasin in the Sun strive to work with developers to cultivate, preserve, and enhance the cultures they are building within. DPR employs and trains many second-language speakers, putting them through their apprenticeship programs and ensuring they have a sense of pride in their craft. This mural aims to portray DPR’s mission of integrity, uniqueness, enjoyment, and ever-forward. DPR’s mission statement is “We exist to build great things.” In the area where the mural is displayed, you can also find this printed above the doorway: “Who we build is as important as what we build. Tú importas.”
Artist Amado Castillo III says, “DPR plays a significant role in shaping the Austin, TX skyline, including Block 185 (Google Tower), which stands tall next to the flowing Colorado River downtown. Each individual depicted in the mural represents a unique component of a more extensive operation; everyone has come together to build and create. Individuals from differing cultures, backgrounds, and environments work alongside one another under one common goal: to construct something sturdy, lasting, and trustworthy. The DPR team’s energy is palpable, teamwork impeccable, and a place where you know you matter.
Ultimately, all aspects of operations are brought forth through the work of human hands in many forms and manners. From engineering to design, to analytical, and many other areas, all hands work toward creating and accomplishing. Incredible, seemingly impossible structures are built by the very hands and strength of these individuals. Whether through operating machinery or utilizing tools manually, human effort is essential to these operations.
During my personal experience of standing on a higher level floor of the Indeed Tower, l couldn’t help but think about a bird's perspective, better known as a “bird’s-eye view.” These structures ultimately allow us humans to experience views and perspectives of the ground below beyond our own human abilities. I believe that as humans, we are able to embrace the details and intentions of design and construction through moments such as the ones I had, experiencing such elevated views, which is quite impactful.”
The mural reveal occurred during the company’s holiday party on 12/9/2023 when all employees gathered together instead of being spread throughout different job sites around the city. Amando spoke to the employees about his process and inspiration, and the applause was incredible when the mural was finally revealed.
