About this Event

Presented by Six Square, Austin’s Black Cultural District, Beyond the Square is a neighborhood party that connects Black Austinites to their roots on the east side.

Set at the Six Square house in East Austin, our goals are to explore and highlight the multi-faceted talents of Black creatives and reclaim space for community in Austin’s historically Black neighborhoods.

Out on the yard we’ll have a DJ, live performances by local Black musicians, a vendor market, and art installations curated by Raasin McIntosh, founder of Raasin in the Sun.

Our art installations will explore the progression of Black art, from traditional media like paint to digital art. Rex Hamilton will be completing a mural live while Cindy Elizabeth presents a mixed media installation reflecting Black identity.

Inside the historic home, we’ll feature activations that showcase a variety of Black cultural expressions:

Libations will explore the origin of staple dishes in Black food and drink. We’ll be serving small plates inspired by icons in Black food culture alongside curated selections from Wines of Dotson-Cervantes.

Storytelling and Media

Black activists and artists of history have empowered innovative Black storytellers of today to tell their own unapologetic and authentic story and forward culture. During the activation we will display work from both historical Black activists and modern day Austin artists.

From 5 to 6pm we will host a Speaker Series with Austin-based creatives of color. They will share some of their short-form content and speak about using media as a tool for displaying positive representation and building strong narratives; how they monetize as content creators within the digital space; and answer questions from audience members.
